Since 2011, A2S2 has been tracking artemisinin imports into India, in terms of volume and prices (both exc. and inc. duty).
In December 2012, the average, monthly artemisinin price (excl. duty) reached its lowest level since February 2010 at US$ 360.28. Between then and April 2013, the average price hovered within a range of US$ 357 - 432, only rising above US$ 400 in April 2013. That month's average was slightly inflated by a couple of imports of semi-synthetic artemisinin - see below. Since April 2013, the price steadily decreased month by month to US$ 267.51 (excl. duty) in December 2013. Over 2014, the price has remained in the US$ 230-270 region.
Semi-Synthetic Artemisinin Imports
In July 2012, A2S2 identified the first semi-synthetic import (qty: 1kg; unit price: US$ 507.76, excl. duty) into India (from Italy) since we have been tracking such data. In April 2013, a further two imports have been identified, both of which were again 1kg and originating from Italy. The two unit prices recorded in this month were US$ 771.64 and US$ 424.20 (both excl. duty). In August 2013 a forth, larger-volume semi-synthetic import was recorded (10kg; import price: US$ 421.80, excl. duty). In 2014, there have been two imports recorded: one in July (0.9 kg, US$ 413.98 excl. duty) and one in August (150kg, US$ 275.43, excl. duty).
Annual Data for 2014
As the adjacent and below charts show, 2014 has seen that largest annual volume or artemisinin imported into India: 191MT. This is 144% that of the previous year. In 2014, 99% of the artemisinin imported into India has come from either China or Vietnam
In terms of price, artemisinin imports have remained within the US$ 270-230 (excl. duty) range in 2014, falling to the lowest level in December US$ 236.
